THE MAIN ACTIVITIES OF THE MUSEUM

The Museum of the IO RAS history

Scientific and educational work - excursions

Employees of the Institute conduct excursions and thematic lectures for museum visitors, mainly for schoolchildren and young students, in various areas of science studying the World Ocean: history, biology, technology. The main task of the Museum is to acquaint the general population with scientific research bordering on a feat, a galaxy of world famous oceanologists who laid the foundation for modern knowledge about the World Ocean, as well as to convey new knowledge about the World Ocean to schoolchildren and the younger generation, to explain to them how important it is to study and save the ocean.

Excursions are held with a demonstration of films, slides and instruments in the laboratories.

Excursions on underwater technology are conducted by leading employees of the Institute, they talk about research on the manned submersibles "Mir", and in the Institute's pool they conduct a demonstration of the unique underwater robot GNOM, where schoolchildren have the opportunity to control this device.

Unlike municipal museums, our Museum is part of the living organism of the Institute. We have the opportunity to take children to various laboratories, show them authentic collections and some priceless biological and geological exhibits that scientists, students and graduate students still work with.

An example is a unique, authentic and the only one in the country wet preparation of a lobe-finned fish - coelacanth (Latimeria Chalumnae Smith), acquired by the Institute during the 17th voyage of the RV Dmitry Mendeleev in the Indian Ocean in 1971 near the Comoros, which is exhibited in the hall of the Institute.

Exhibition activity

During its existence, the Museum has had several re-expositions. The latest updated stationary exposition consists of parts reflecting the priority areas of scientific activity of the Institute of Oceanology of RAS: "History of the Institute", "North Pole SP-station", "Physical direction", "Geological direction", "Environmental (biological) direction", "Technical direction".

Along with the improvement and renewal of permanent exhibitions, the museum is actively engaged in exhibition activities, organizing temporary thematic exhibitions using exhibits from the museum's funds. Individual exhibits and collections of our Museum participate in other exhibitions and various thematic events.
