Scientific activity

The purpose and subject of the Institute's activities is to carry out fundamental scientific research and applied developments in the field of oceanology using the research fleet, aircraft, underwater and space vehicles and other technical means.

In the period from 2011 to 2016, the staff of the Institute received more than 100 patents for scientific and technical developments, more than 15 patent applications were registered. In addition, more than 30 certificates of registration of databases and certificates of state registration of rights to software were received, 123 prototypes of equipment were created or modernized.
The most valuable scientific equipment includes the two deep-sea manned vehicles (GOA) Mir-1 and Mir-2, developed by the Institute and built in Finland, with a working depth of up to 6000 m, as well as a ship system for raising and lowering them. These are the best-in-class devices in the world. The Institute has also created and operates unique instrumental systems for ocean research.
